I am a
small child in bed with the flu. It is quiet now, time to go to
sleep - yet impossible. Bedtime, and I am hearing a slight ringing
in my right ear. Damn it, this noise; it is keeping me awake. I am scared. I yell out and my mother comes running into my room. "It's very late, honey. Just say your prayers; it is the fever breaking and it will go away." She strokes my hair, kisses my forehead and ear. I giggle, and soon I am asleep. A day later the noise and the flu are gone and I am back in school.... Nearly half a century has passed. I have tinnitus. It is always there, either overtly present or in hiding, like the grim reaper. Yet I feel fortunate. I am in treatment. "Cured," I call myself, but it is only semantically a cure. I do not hear the noise but it is there, offstage. Once a day, at night, I take two pills ["1/20 th the maximum recommended dosage, don't worry," Dr. Shemesh once said. "Let me be the doctor - trust me."] And I say the Sh'ma (a prayer of unity) and am good until the next night. Yes, I DO trust Dr. Shemesh. Because of his reputation, I have come to Israel, and others have come because of me (like Ray from Hawaii, now my friend) and more because of him - and so on. A good tradition is being built, renewed: WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR EACH OTHER: that is the secret part of the cure - the part we don't take with water.... When I came here three years ago and first met Dr. Shemesh, it was an inspiration. I wrote a pastiche, a "Canterbury Tale," in which people on their way to a miracle cure meet in an inn and tell their tales of love, woe, life. I hope to meet you in Jerusalem. This city is MY Canterbury - and more . We can break bread together as you tell your tale. I'll listen carefully and try to help make you feel comfortable here - as you too are treated to the cure. |

| A man with ringing in one of his
ears, Set out on a journey to look for cures. The first stop was surgery, then zanex(.25), Which made him forget he was more dead than alive.... | And he did!....After two skeptical years of
trying everything from acupuncture to zanex in Chicago, I read about a doctor in Israel who
successfully treats noise-induced tinnitus. Particularily convincing was
an article in the "Jerusalem Post" (Dec. 7, 1997) which stated: "A study of 200 soldiers he [Dr.Zacharya Shemesh,M.D.] conducted with colleagues in the Israel Defense Forces found a notable improvement in the quality of life of tinnitus patients. They reported an overall success rate of 90% -- higher than anywhere else in the world -- and many patients said the noise had completely disappeared. ... To make a long story short, I contacted an Israeli patient of Dr.Shemesh (a teacher who raved about how he had helped her make life worth living again). Her encouragement led me to Israel to seek his help. When I arrived, I received a comprehensive medical evaluation and on the basis of the results, Dr. Shemesh and I built an individualized treatment program for me. Now I am in the middle of the treatment and I feel it is very effective - if not a miracle. Should readers wish to know more about Dr. Shemesh's evaluation (in conjuction with Hadassah Medical Center) and his individualized treatment program for visitors, they may contact me here in Israel, where I now reside.
